The final week of the NFL regular season. For the Ravens and Eagles, it was a major disappointment. Both teams were expected to be playoff contenders. Instead the Ravens were basically eliminated by Thanksgiving. Playing in the weak NFC East, the Eagles stayed in the hunt despite a losing record. The loss in week 16 to the Redskins ended their playoff chances and ended Chip Kelly’s run as head coach.
The Redskins season will continue, and they have momentum. Winners of four of their last five and with one the most productive quarterbacks in December, the Redskins are back in the playoffs for the first time in three years.
Here are my NFL picks for week 17:
Ravens over Cincinnati
The effort the Ravens showed against the Steelers demonstrated that they have not quit on John Harbaugh. Ryan Mallett has incentive to have another good showing. He could be in position to be the Ravens back-up quarterback next year. If Joe Flacco’s recovery does not progress as hoped, Mallett could be QB One (Friday Night Lights lingo) for the 2016 regular season opener.
Eagles over Giants
The Chip Kelly firing may be a rallying point for the Eagles. Add to this game interim coach Pat Shurmer would like to be considered for the job permanently. The Eagles as whole will be the team looking to make a good impression for whoever is in charge next season.
Redskins over Dallas
Head Coach Jay Gruden said on Thursday the starters will play in this game. It is unknown if this will be a one and done like Indianapolis would do with Peyton Manning or if this more like the 2007 Giants in their regular season finale against New England. What is known is that Dallas is not good. The are averaging just over 10 points game in their last three.
